Straw VS Straw+Coffee VS Straw+Coffee+Aspen Chips VS Aspen Chips+Coffee
    #19585578 - 02/18/14 03:04 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Ive got a new experiment going.

Ive got 4 bags containing different substrate's. They are as follows:

1. Straw
2. Straw, Coffee. ,Mixed to about 80% Straw, 20% Coffee
3. Straw, Coffee, Aspen Chips (Pet bedding). Mixed to about 40% straw/Aspen, 20% Coffee
4. Aspen Chips, Coffee. Mixed to about 80% Aspen Chips, 20% Coffee.

Pasteurized everything (Coffee, Straw, and Aspen chips)

This was done about 48 hours ago. Looking today, I see new myc growth in all 4 bags.

This test is to see what substrate supports growth the best. I also want to see if there is a taste difference between the growth mediums.

These were all inoculated with an old Blue Oyster grow kit.

Anyone want to place bets on the substrate that works best? :crazy2:

~Sudo

UPDATE:

Its been 7 days. Here is where we stand.

Straw + Coffee
The substrate on top right now is the Straw and Coffee mixture. I see strong mycelial growth, especially through areas thick with coffee.

Aspen Wood Chips + Coffee
The myc growth is good.

Aspen Wood Chips + Straw + Coffee
The myc grow is very close to the Aspen Wood Chips + Coffee mix.

Straw
This appears to be colonizing the slowest of the four.

Update Summary: The test is going well. There are no signs of contamination. I wonder if freezing the coffee before pasteurizing helped.

I can definitely tell that these Blue Oysters love coffee as colonization is thickest in the areas that have more coffee. Its looking like the Straw + Coffee mix has colonized much more substrate and is a clear leader.

My bet...straw.

I have played with aspen a bit.  It is slower to colonize and fruit.

Have tried coffee just due to the amount of green grows I have seen especially pasteurized.

Looking forward to your results though.  I like experiments.

 Green Grow? I assume you mean trich. You saying that you have seen a higher amount of trich contamination with pasteurized coffee grounds?

There was a typo....it should have read "haven't tried"

Yeah there are quite a few folks having trouble with trich in pasteurized coffee.  Most people recommend sterilizing it.

But, like I tried to say, I have no experience with coffee at all.

Coffee and straw don't go well together.  Green mold is much more likely.

Use coffee when you can keep it sterile until full colonization.

If you have aspen locally, you probably also have Douglas fir, which makes a pretty good sawdust substrate, even though it's a conifer.  It's best to age the sawdust in the sun for a year when possible.

Sharing in your optimism, im not sure this will work out well.

I got the coffee grounds from a local coffee shop. When I picked them up, they just had the bucket opened next to their equipment and filling it as needed. So prob some of the most contaminated coffee grounds I could use.

Time will tell. Thanks for the input!

can we have method of pasteurization, and ratio and type of inoculation? I am betting straw, if chopped up fine to be the fastest colonized. I will go with 80% straw and 20% coffee for the higher BE%, and how saturated the coffee is on colonization time and depending on method(s) of pasteurization and coffee ground prep, on if you trich out or not.

For Straw - Heat pasteurized for about 75 min at 160 - 180 f. Adding a little hydrated lime to the mix to up the pH. (Did not take a pH reading)

For coffee - I pasteurized in jars similar to a brf tek. Kept at 170 f for about 75 min. In hindsight, im thinking I should have done that 3 day pasteurizing method to kill the mold spores.

The straw and wood chips were soaked for 4 hours before pasteurization. Coffee was frozen for storage. I thawed it and then added enough water to reach filed capacity before jarring/pasteurizing.

Let jars cool with the straw and wood chips. All were at about 80 f. Mixed out ratios and bagged.

I used an old Blue Oyster mushroom grow kit as the inoculant. The substrate log was about the size of a pound of coffee. I took that out and placed it in a gallon ziplock bag and broke up into small pieces. Used roughly 1/3 mix inoculant to substrate.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

BTW: Whats "BE%"

Biological efficiency.  It's a measure of dry sub to wet mushroom yield.

Not really a significant thing to worry about if you are just hobby growing.

Every time I have pasteurized coffee, the green stuff has proven it to be a waste of my time even when I over-spawned it - I hope this isn't the case for you.  So yeah, my bet is on straw and I hope that I lose.

Are the aspen chips local, or are you using the pet store stuff?

Pet store stuff. Though I do have a ton of them locally.

I use the pet store chips too and haven't had any trouble with them.  We have a lot of aspens here as well but there isn't really any kind of industry around that can supply chips of any one kind of tree, and even if they did I don't think the neighborhood association would like the pile in my driveway

I would like to find a local chaga strain that I could inoculate some of them with though.
