Doing a batch of lime pasteurized mixed substrate now. I'll post pics and a write up later.

So here's the first part of it. I started off with 9 lbs of the premade mixture I had left that I made back in October (see OP). I then added 6 full quarts of red oak sawdust, 2 quarts of coarse vermiculite, 1 cup of cottonseed meal, and a generous covering of chopped straw.

I mixed 22g of hydrated lime to 3 gallons of water and heated it to around 120F, then added 6 quarts of the mixture to the dry substrate and I'm letting it sit for a couple hours before I tray it all up and spawn it. I'll post those pics later tonight or tomorrow.

And...... On to spawning.... I filled each shoe box to the inner ledge with my substrate mixture (about 4 1/2 qt each). In the first spawn pic the top two trays are SRA, and the bottom two are TT. I used a half jar of spawn per tray. In the second spawn pic I used about 3/4 qt of G. lucidium spawn per tray. I don't know if this is common or not, but I had to tear the myc apart in areas that contained the most grass seed. It was like tough rubber! After cleaning the sides and lips off, I labeled they and into the incubation martha they went.

Looking forward to this!

I am interested in your lime pasteurization technique - I always use lime when I pasteurize but have never relied on it fully mostly out of fear.  I will have to do a search.

Thanks, glad to have you here.

Since I had 1 1/2 gallons of limed water left after the sawdust batch, I decided to do a "for shits and giggles" batch.

It's a battle between SRA and TT for the Heavyweight Decomposer title belt!!!

Let's start with the battle grounds!

Both combatants will by competing to see who can fully colonized shredded newspaper, dipped in LIME WATERRRRRR!!! The battle zone has been prepared by dunking and squeezing the mangled masses until their blood stops running.

Next, we disembowel it all again until every little chunk is a fluffy mass of carnage.

Then we lay down a cotton foundation for each fighter, to mop up any blood that didn't drain off before. Finally, we layer our combatants and their proving grounds, lightly packing them down.

Now that our fighters have been released from their corners, let the battle begin!!!

P.S. I may have smoked too much bud tonight....

thats awesome!
i wanna try this.  with sawdust.
what would ur procedure be with fuel pellets and lime pasteurization?  like how much water to how much hydrated lime?  and is it a soak, or a dunk and squeeze like ur newspapers?

i've read a couple teks about it, just wondering ur take.

glad I'm following this thread, i will learn a lot!

I haven't done pellets yet, so I'll have to defer you to Aleon's thread.

Finally got some of the huge frozen block of white oak and ash sawdust off the back of my truck. Starting the next batch of substrate now. Gonna be spawning this batch with some COTW grains, and a few more Reishi, Turkey Tail, and King Stroparia spawnings as well.

Got the third batch done.

My martha incubator is getting a little full. I have room for ten more totes, but I don't know if it can handle the weight. Might have to build a strong shelf above the marthas to handle all the totes. Here's a list of everything I have colonizing in it right now.

King Stropharia - 4 sawdust mix, 2 newspaper
Turkey Tail - 4 sawdust mix, 2 newspaper
COTW - 4 sawdust mix
G. lucidium - 5 sawdust mix
Pink Oyster - 4 newspaper (old straw spawn, not really colonizing well)

plus one bag of "un-named species" to spawn outdoors.

Gonna do 2 more SRA, 2 more TT, 2 King Oyster (different strain), and 4 shiitake totes today too. The martha will hold 34 of those shoe box totes, but I'm gonna build a shelf today to hold it all. Gonna have to make room to use both marthas for fruiting.

Nice!  That thing is full!  Have you found the martha to help for incubating?

I had an old pink culture that was doing nothing for a few weeks & then took off!  I hope yours recovers as well.

So I added too much water on this next batch of sawdust mix. After thoroughly mixing it all I stacked all the substrate to one side, propped up the tub, and use a rag to soak up the extra water. I have been ringing out the rag onto the substrate to help with the lime pasteurizing. Washed the rest off my mini-tubs. These are way more ecological than using filter patch bags, for pasteurized substrates at least.

Thanks, it's about to be completely full. I wouldn't say the martha helps incubation any, other than being able to fit so much in it. I looked and the Pink Oyster newspaper totes were all contamed, so I dumped them.

Alright, last batch is done! Not doing any more for a while, I think I've got enough. Here is the last batch:

In my limited experience with G. lucidium it will thicken very quick and get tough as hell. I almost waited too long to spawn myself. It also seems to turn the grains to mush, making it even harder to break apart. I am now planning my next reishi grow as most of what I grew last time got snapped up by family that wanted in on the excellent benefits  Still got a quarter pound to keep me going but it won't last at this rate.

Haha, that's cool as shit your family was interested!  It took some effort, but I've slowly got mine into it as well.  My mother in law tells everyone she meets about reishi now, after seeing her cholesterol numbers go drastically down, among other good results.

And yeah, with reishi, anything later than a DAY after full colonization is asking for trouble when it comes to spawn.  It eats all, and quickly.
