Amanita vaginata?
    #13733977 - 01/05/11 06:57 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I found these on the ground beneath some shrubs (don't know sp), in Portugal (Europe).

Cap: silver greyish with approx 9 cm in diameter, white veil remanants stained rusty brown (although I think this could be dirt)

Found no particular smell.
The pictures aren't so good because I forgot to take the camera, so they are from my phone and it was a foggy day

No matter how many times I look at an Amanita vaginata, I don't see how it got it's name.  Sometimes mushroom names seem correct, this one doesn't!

How many people have seen a stink horn (Phallus impudicus et al) and not thought, yeah, that looks a little like a dong, but this one, really?  This doesn't look like poon tang to me!

Maybe, i cant tell what im looking at in the last photo, it looks like it might be scales on the stem like some sp of that section have or maybe a veil remnant which they dont. You need a shot of the volva too.  Don't eat it anyway.

those had the stem a bit ruined from the rain, these pics are from some better specimens and with a better phone camera.
(I also can't understand what does this have that could resemble a vagina)

Yes, on those new pics you can see a volva and remnants of the universal.  They look like Amanita vaginata to me...

'Vagin' means "sheath or scabbard" in Latin, and A. vaginata has a sac or sheath-like volva.

I see what you mean, and not trying to split hairs, but the word is actually vagina in Latin.  Vagin isn't a root word like how we think of root words.  Words decline in Latin to replace articles like "the" and prepositions like "to" or "of" so you'd never see just "vagin" used in any sentence.  Amanita is Ancient Greek, vagina is Latin, and vaginita is garbage Latin that doesn't exist.  Put it all together and you have a mess as far as I'm concerned.  But on the other hand, people have the right to name these species how they want.
